Getting to Bella Bella​

Bella Bella is a remote community accessible by air and sea.

Plan accordingly and book accommodations and transportation in advance.​

By Air

Pacific Coastal Airlines

Experience the beauty of the British Columbia coast with Pacific Coastal Airlines. Daily scheduled flights depart from Vancouver International Airport (YVR) to Bella Bella Airport (ZEL). This is the most convenient option for visitors traveling from Vancouver.

By Sea

BC Ferries

A scenic ferry journey through the Inside Passage and along the Central Coast. The "Discovery Coast Connector" route operates seasonally (April to September) and provides a unique way to experience the coastal landscape. The ferry departs from Port Hardy on northern Vancouver Island and takes approximately 10-12 hours.

Getting to Port Hardy

If you're taking the ferry, you'll need to reach Port Hardy first. Port Hardy is located on Northern Vancouver Island. Options include:

 

By Air: Fly into Vancouver and connect to Port Hardy via Pacific Coastal Airlines

By Car: Drive north on Vancouver Island via Highway 19 to Port Hardy (approximately 5-6 hours from Victoria)

By Bus: Take BC Transit or private coach services from Victoria or other Vancouver Island communities

Booking Tips

  • Book transportation well in advance, especially for summer travel

  • Consider combining air and sea travel for a complete coastal experience

  • Allow extra time for weather delays, which can occur in coastal areas

  • Bring valid identification for both air and sea travel

Bella Bella is beautiful year-round, each season offering unique experiences:​​

Note: Bella Bella has a temperate rainforest climate with mild winters and cool summers. The region receives significant rainfall, particularly in winter months (Oct-Mar). Summer months are generally drier with occasional rain.

Bella Bella Tides

Tides in Heiltsuk Territory are significant and affect marine activities, fishing, and kayaking. Understanding tidal patterns is important for planning your activities safely.

Fishing

Bella Bella is renowned for world-class fishing opportunities in pristine waters. Whether you're an experienced angler or a first-time fisher, local guides can help you have an unforgettable experience.

 

Salt Water Fishing

The waters surrounding Bella Bella are home to abundant salmon and halibut populations. Fishing is excellent year-round, with different species available in different seasons.

 

Primary Fish Species:

• Chinook Salmon (King Salmon): Large, powerful fish; best June-September

• Coho Salmon (Silver Salmon): Excellent fighters; best August-October

• Sockeye Salmon (Red Salmon): Available during salmon runs; best July-September

• Pink Salmon: Abundant; best July-August

• Pacific Halibut: Large bottom fish; available year-round, best May-September

Fishing Charters:

Local charter operators provide guided fishing trips with all necessary equipment. Popular operators include Milbanke AdventuresCultus Sound Charters, and others listed in the Business Directory.

 

Charter Services Typically Include:

• Experienced captain and crew

• All fishing tackle and bait

• Knowledge of best fishing grounds and techniques

• Safety equipment and life jackets

• Optional services: fish processing, smoking, and shipping

 

Fresh Water Fishing

While less common than salt water fishing, fresh water fishing opportunities exist in nearby rivers and streams. Contact local guides for information on fresh water fishing options.

Fishing Licenses

BC TIDAL WATERS SPORT FISHING LICENSE INFORMATION

​All licences are now delivered electronically through the National Recreational Licensing System (NRLS).

For your convenience, purchase your licence online and print a copy before your trip.

You are required to carry a printed and signed version of your licence once you have purchased it electronically –

*Remember to bring a printed and signed copy with you on every fishing trip!

  • Waterproof jacket and rain gear (essential year-round)

  • Layers for variable temperatures

  • Sturdy hiking boots

  • Hat and gloves (especially for winter)

  • Tread lightly on the land: Follow Leave No Trace principles and respect protected areas

  • Embrace cultural learning: Participate in tours, workshops, and cultural experiences offered by community members

  • Ask permission: Before photographing people, cultural sites, or ceremonies, always ask for permission

  • Learn the language: Make an effort to learn and use Heiltsuk words and phrases

  • Respect the environment: Do not remove plants, animals, or artifacts; do not disturb wildlife
