The Heart of Heiltsuk Territory

 

Bella Bella, known as Wágḷísḷa in the Heiltsuk language, is the main community of the Heiltsuk Nation and the administrative center of Heiltsuk Territory. Located on Campbell Island, Bella Bella is a living testament to the resilience, cultural pride, and deep connection to the land that defines the Heiltsuk people.

The Heiltsuk have called these lands and waters home for over 14,000 years. Our history is not confined to museums or textbooks—it is alive in our ceremonies, our language, our art, and our daily relationship with the natural world. The village sites, burial grounds, and cultural features scattered throughout our territory tell stories of our ancestors and guide us today.

Today, Bella Bella is a vibrant, self-governing community of approximately 1,500 members. The Heiltsuk Nation operates essential services, businesses, and cultural institutions that sustain our people and welcome visitors with genuine hospitality. From the Heiltsuk Economic Development Corporation to the Q̓átuw̓alas Visitor Information Centre, our community is committed to sustainable development, cultural preservation, and sharing our heritage with respectful visitors.

A Place of Natural Wonder

 

Bella Bella sits at the gateway to the Great Bear Rainforest, one of the world's most ecologically significant and intact temperate rainforests. The landscape surrounding Bella Bella is characterized by:

  • Ancient Cedar Forests: Towering old-growth trees that have stood for centuries, providing shelter, food, and materials for the Heiltsuk people

  • Pristine Waterways: Inlets, channels, and open ocean teeming with salmon, halibut, herring, and other marine resources

  • Abundant Wildlife: Whales (orcas, humpbacks, grays), dolphins, sea lions, bears, eagles, and the rare Kermode bear (Spirit Bear)

The climate is mild and temperate, with cool summers and relatively mild winters by northern standards. The region receives significant rainfall, particularly in winter months, which sustains the lush rainforest ecosystem.

In 2019, the Heiltsuk Nation opened a new ceremonial Big House, the first built in the community in roughly 120 years.

Featured artists include Ben Houstie, Dean Hunt, and Fred Anderson Jr., whose pieces are treasured by collectors worldwide.
