Bella Bella (Wágḷísḷa) is located on Campbell Island on the Central Coast of British Columbia, approximately 160 km north of Port Hardy and 450 km north of Vancouver. It is the main community of the Heiltsuk Nation and serves as the gateway to Heiltsuk Territory and the Great Bear Rainforest. The community is accessible by air (Pacific Coastal Airlines from Vancouver) or by sea (BC Ferries Discovery Coast Connector from Port Hardy, seasonal service June-September).
Bella Bella is celebrated for its deep cultural heritage, pristine wilderness, and exceptional access to the Great Bear Rainforest. The community is known for being the home of the Heiltsuk Nation, a First Nation with over 14,000 years of continuous presence in the region. Iconic attractions include the Big House (G̱vúkva'áus Haíłzaqv), the Q̓átuw̓alas Visitor Information Centre, Shearwater Resort & Marina, world-class salmon and halibut fishing, whale watching opportunities, and the extraordinary art and craftsmanship of Heiltsuk artists.
Bella Bella offers a diverse mix of activities to suit every interest. Visitors can explore the Big House and learn about Heiltsuk culture and history, join guided forest medicine walks to discover traditional plant knowledge, visit local artisan studios and the Q̓átuw̓alas shop to purchase authentic Heiltsuk art and crafts, enjoy fresh local cuisine at community eateries, book marine eco-tours to see whales and marine wildlife, arrange guided fishing charters for salmon and halibut, relax at Shearwater Resort's facilities, or simply immerse themselves in the beauty of the rainforest and coast. Whether you're seeking cultural experiences, outdoor adventures, or peaceful reflection, Bella Bella has something to offer every visitor.
Bella Bella is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts with a diverse array of activities. Join a whale watching or marine eco-tour to see orcas, humpback whales, dolphins, sea lions, and other marine life in their natural habitat. Book a fishing charter to experience world-class salmon and halibut fishing with experienced local guides. Explore the temperate rainforest on hiking trails and guided forest medicine walks. Visit local artisan studios and galleries. Enjoy meals at community restaurants featuring fresh local seafood and traditional ingredients.
Bella Bella is accessible year-round, but the most popular visiting season is May through September when weather is generally warmer and drier, and BC Ferries service is in full operation. Summer months offer the best conditions for marine activities, wildlife viewing, and outdoor exploration. However, each season offers unique experiences: spring brings new growth and migrating whales, summer offers long daylight hours and calm seas, fall brings salmon runs and changing foliage, and winter offers storm watching and peaceful solitude. Plan your visit based on the activities and experiences you're most interested in.
Don't miss the Big House (G̱vúkva'áus Haíłzaqv), the spiritual and cultural heart of the Heiltsuk Nation. Visit the Q̓átuw̓alas Visitor Information Centre to learn about Heiltsuk culture, history, and to purchase authentic local art and crafts. Explore Shearwater Resort & Marina for accommodations, dining, and access to marine activities. Take a guided marine eco-tour to witness whales, dolphins, and other marine wildlife.
