Visitor Pledge: Welcome to Heiltsuk Territory

Welcome to Bella Bella and Heiltsuk Territory. We invite you to be a respectful visitor and consider how your visit impacts our community, our environment, and our culture. By taking the Heiltsuk Visitor Pledge, you commit to sustainable, respectful travel that honors the 14,000 years of Heiltsuk presence in this territory. Tourism can provide economic benefits and help share Heiltsuk culture with the world, but only if visitors travel responsibly.

Respect the land. Respect the people. Respect the culture.

By taking this pledge, you help:

  • Protect the environment — Preserve the Great Bear Rainforest for future generations

  • Support the community — Ensure tourism benefits local people and businesses

  • Honour Heiltsuk culture — Show respect for Indigenous traditions and knowledge

  • Create meaningful experiences — Develop authentic connections with the land and people

The Heiltsuk Visitor Pledge

As a visitor to Heiltsuk Territory, I pledge to:

Respect the Land

The Great Bear Rainforest and surrounding waters are sacred to the Heiltsuk people.

I will:

  • Leave no trace — Take only photographs, leave only footprints. Remove all garbage and leave the land as I found it.

  • Stay on marked trails — Respect trail boundaries and closures. Do not venture into restricted or sacred areas.

  • Protect the ecosystem — Do not pick plants, collect shells, driftwood, or other natural items. Do not disturb nests, dens, or wildlife habitats.

  • Minimize my impact — Use designated campsites and facilities. Dispose of waste responsibly and follow all environmental guidelines.

Respect Wildlife

The Great Bear Rainforest is home to grizzly bears, black bears, wolves, cougars, eagles, and marine mammals.

I will:

  • Observe from a distance — Do not approach, feed, or photograph wildlife in ways that disturb them. Use binoculars and telephoto lenses.

  • Make noise while hiking — Alert bears and other wildlife to your presence by talking, using a bear bell, or making noise on the trail.

  • Carry bear spray — Be prepared for wildlife encounters and know how to use bear spray safely.

  • Never feed wildlife — Feeding animals endangers them and creates dangerous situations for future visitors.

Respect the Heiltsuk People & Culture

The Heiltsuk Nation has inhabited this territory for over 14,000 years.

I will:

  • Ask permission before photographing — Always ask before taking photos of people, ceremonies, cultural sites, or the Big House. Respect if someone declines.

  • Support local artists and businesses — Buy directly from Heiltsuk artists and support locally-owned businesses. Your spending supports the community.

  • Learn about Heiltsuk culture — Take time to understand Heiltsuk history, traditions, and contemporary culture. Attend tours and cultural programs with an open mind.

  • Respect sacred sites — Honour the spiritual significance of cultural locations. Follow all guidance from local guides and community members.

  • Be a good listener — Engage respectfully with locals. Listen to their stories, knowledge, and perspectives without judgment.

Respect the Community

Bella Bella is a small, close-knit community.

I will:

  • Respect privacy — Do not photograph residents without permission. Respect their access to community spaces and resources.

  • Follow local guidance — Listen to and follow advice from locals, guides, and community members about safety, access, and cultural protocols.

  • Be courteous — Greet people respectfully, say thank you, and be mindful of noise levels, especially in the evening.

  • Obey all signage — Pay attention to warning signs, closures, and restrictions. They exist for safety and cultural reasons.

Respect the Waters

The ocean and waterways are central to Heiltsuk life.

I will:

  • Practice marine safety — Wear a life jacket, follow boating regulations, and respect weather warnings. The ocean is powerful and unpredictable.

  • Protect marine life — Do not approach seals, sea lions, whales, or other marine animals. Observe from a safe distance.

  • Leave no trace in water — Do not dump garbage, fuel, or waste into the ocean. Use designated facilities for all waste.

  • Respect fishing areas — Do not interfere with commercial or subsistence fishing operations. Obtain proper licenses if you plan to fish.

Prepare Responsibly

Bella Bella is a remote community with limited services.

I will:

  • Research before I arrive - Understand the landscape, weather, wildlife, and limitations of visiting a remote community.

  • Pack appropriately - Bring waterproof gear, warm layers, sturdy boots, and emergency supplies. Weather can change rapidly.

  • Know the risks - Understand potential hazards including wildlife, rugged terrain, unpredictable weather, and limited medical services.

  • Share your plans - Let someone know where you're going and when you expect to return.

Take Care of Myself

Visiting Heiltsuk Territory requires physical and mental preparation.

I will:

  • Be honest about my abilities - Choose activities appropriate for my fitness level and experience.

  • Follow safety guidelines - Wear appropriate gear, use proper equipment, and follow all safety instructions from guides and locals.

  • Respect my limits - Turn back if conditions become unsafe. There is no shame in choosing a safer option.

  • Stay healthy - Bring necessary medications and be prepared for the remote setting.
